A Crotian freediver named Vitomir Maričić sets a
new world record for longest underwater walk in single breath,
after traversing a distance of 107 metres (351 feet and 0.5 inches) in 3 minutes 6 seconds at the bottom of the
pool. He also had a weight in his arms which refrained him from floating
upward.
According to Guinness World Record website, he
broke the earlier record of fellow Croatian freediver Boris Milosic, who had
walked 96 metres (314 ft 11.5 in) underwater in March 2020.
Vitomir Maričić attempted the longest underwater
walk record in order to bring awareness to the research done around freediving
(the sport or activity of diving under water without the use of breathing
apparatus, especially in deep water) by
Thallassotherapia Opatija, a hospital in Croatia.

The attempt took place in the swimming pool of
Opajita hospital for the rehabilitation of the heart on 17 September 2021. The
hospital specialises in the treatment of heart, lung and rheumatic diseases.
Maričić also involved in numerous good causes
such as raising awareness about ocean pollution and unethical shark hunting.
A video has been shared by Guinness World Records
(GWR) on their official YouTube Channel, in which Maričić creating a world record by walking 107
meters underwater in one breath, now he
won the title for the longest underwater walk with one breath (male).
“How far can Vitomir Maričić (Croatia) walk
underwater... with one breath?” GWR wrote while posting the video. The clip
opens to show the man standing in one corner of a swimming pool. Within
moments, he starts walking slowly. Text inserts on the video also gives more
context to the record.
Maričić reportedly didn’t bear any sort of
particular coaching earlier than making his try. For instance, it also contains
a quote from the record creator where he shared, "As a professional
freediver I don’t really need to prepare that much for any breath hold record.”
He is a professional freediver and a known face
in Croatia. He won the Freediving World Championship in 2021 which was held in
Belgrade. The freediver also clinched a gold and two bronze medals at the 2021
AIDA Freediving World Championship held in Limassol, Cyprus.
Vitomir entered his first freediving competition
four years ago after being interested in the sport for a long time.
Just over a year after beginning his professional
career, he achieved the Dynamic apnea with Bi-Fins world record at the 2019
Croatian CMAS National Pool Freediving Championship.
Dynamic apnea involves breath-holding while
moving continuously. Bi-Fins, as the name suggests, are two separate,
unconnected fins. Vitomir dove a total distance of 264.7 m (868 ft 5 in).
Further proving himself as one of the best
freedivers in the world, last year Vitomir won a gold medal and two bronzes at
the 2021 AIDA Freediving World Championship in Limassol, Cyprus.
