"Bond Madam" solves the dropout crises in Udupi School

 



Have you ever heard of a school teacher who has completed her education by relying on scholarship and kindness of the society. And now for the purpose of repaying the debt of this act of society she is  giving financial assistance to her students.

Rekha Kulal, a 32-year-old school teacher from Udupi, Karnataka  has come up with a plan to promote education in society and through  which  student's higher educational journey will also be secured. With the same objective Rekha deposit 1000 rupees in the bank  on the name of each student with a lock of 10 years from the year 2014,  during the admission of every student in the class first. This initiative could  help the student in his or her higher education.

Another purpose of this wonderful and commendable step is to welcoming a student in the school by depositing Rs.1000 on his name. In fact, Teacher Rekha wants to contribute to increase the admission rate at Nuligare Higher Primary School in Hosanagar, about 80 km from Udupi, Karnataka. Apart from this, the increased amount after 10 years proved to be useful in further education of that child.

Teacher Rekha says- “This decision is a way to express my gratitude to the society that helped me in the time of economic crisis. This amount locked in for a period of 10 years and the returns on it will undoubtedly prove to be helpful in higher education of the students in future. My initiative has been appreciated and supported by the members of the School Development Management Committee, the chairman and the school principal K. Ganesh and all other employees and my co-teachers. ”

Having faced many financial problems during her studies, Rekha Kulal completed her education with scholarship and financial support from a generous and big-hearted high school teacher named MS Nagaraja Rao. Subsequently, she also joined teaching profession.

Rekha has sponsored 63 students so far under this scheme. Rekha Kulal start implementing this objective seven years ago. For the first time, at the time of admission of five students in Grade One, Rekha presented a plan to deposit one thousand rupees in the name of each child in front of the school authority. Which was highly appreciated by parents and school staff.

The article and short story writer and voice-over artist Rekha is known as "Bond Madam" among students and parents. Rekha travels about two hours daily from her home to reach the school at Hosanagar. Which is about 50 km from her house in Sankaranarayan. She says that "As long as I am in this work, I will continue this kind of investment for financially weaker students."

Rekha aims to make government schools equal to private schools. Her husband Prabhakar Kulal is a range forest officer. She says- “There was a time when I was unable to buy a new sari while doing diploma at Kumuda Umashankar Teachers Institute Kokkarnay, Udupi. God bless that now I have been able to help the students ”

Three children of daily wage worker Venkatesh are studying in Rekha's school. His daughters Uma Devi and Preeti are getting private scholarships. Venkatesh is also one of the many parents who express their gratitude for Rekha's warmth.
