Death Pool in Red Sea: Scientists find a lethal pool that kills anything that swims into it

Many people are curious to know about the mysterious creatures of the ocean or something related to the sea, because the oceans have given rise to many myths, legends, mysteries and events that are still not fully understood by mankind.

In the chain of solving all these mysteries of deep ocean, scientists have discovered a brackish pool on the surface of the Red Sea, which is extremely dangerous for sea creatures and humans. This unique pool is overly salty and there is absolutely no oxygen in this 10-feet long brine pool; this is the reason why it is impossible for any organism to survive here.

The researchers explained that a brine pool is a depression in the seafloor that is filled with highly concentrated salt water and other chemical elements which is saltier than the surrounding ocean. They said that these underwater pools can stun or kill animals and even pickle them alive.

Scientists have identified this rare 'death pool' in the Gulf of Aqaba, north of the Red Sea, between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Several scientists from the University of Miami discovered it at a depth of 1,770 metres, while observing the ocean floor using a remotely operated underwater vehicle(ROV). The lake is about 100 feet long.

lead researcher Professor Sam Purkis described the deadly pools as “among the most extreme environments on Earth” and said, “brine pool doesn't have any oxygen and can immediately stun or kill any sea creature.”

"At this great depth, there is ordinarily not much life on the seabed. However, the brine pools are a rich oasis of life. Thick carpets of microbes support a diverse suite of animals," said Professor Purkins.

Purkins told Live Science that this discovery could help scientists in the future to find out how the oceans were formed on our planet millions of years ago.

He explains that brine pools are home to a large number of microbes and are rich in biodiversity. These microbes can survive in such harsh environments and studying them can help scientists understand the limits of life on Earth. He also emphasises that these discoveries are essential as they can help determine if alien planets with similar hostile conditions can host any living beings.
