Transgender activist and founder of TransgenderIndia.com, Neysara Rai |
In today’s time there will be hardly anyone who does not know the
name of Neysara Rai. Neysara Rai who is India's renowned
transgender rights activist and founder of TransgenderIndia.com which is a
pioneering portal working for the cause of transgender individuals across the
country and to empower them with information.
On the
International Transgender Day of Visibility 2020 Rai has been put up as part of
an exhibition called ‘Vital Voices: 100 Women
Using their Power to Empower’ at Kennedy Center and one of the busiest performing arts
platforms in the US, hosting around 2,000 performances every year.
Recently, ‘The August Company’ which is a known lifestyle brand of India also featuring Neysara Rai along with other global inspiring women such as Melinda Gates, Malala YusufZadai, Greta Thunberg, Beyonce and Serena Williams.
Rai was just 23 years old when she took a stand aganist her family
for getting a unique identy for her community. Braving stiff opposition from
her family she underwent a sex reassignment surgery. She has always been vocal
about the prejudices transgender individuals face across the country. She is a
veritable trailblazer, insofar as transgender rights movement in India is
concerned.
Neysara who is a strong believer in the power of awareness and knowledge amplified through technology has taken an initiative in the form of TransgenderIndia.com portal. She syas- “In India, transgebder people are seen as as sub-human and crime against them or trafficking of them is not even considred as trafficking. Currently the information spread through the TransgenderIndia platform is translated into six major Indian languages, helping information break through socio-economic and language barriers”
When we talk, about why a
known global movement like ‘Vital Voice’ select Neysara, the Organization says-
through her initiative, ‘TransgenderIndia’ she empowers thousands of
transgender people across India with awareness and knowledge to make informed
choices, thereby preventing them from being lured into sexual or labour
trafficking in the name of culture or tradition".
If we turn the pages of
history, the transgender community in every corner of the world has had to go
through a very difficult period to get their rights. It is unfortunate that the
society has always been dealing with transgender community in a discriminatory
manner. Being transgender is not a crime. We have to understand that no human
being in the world can decide his gender at birth. Studies show that the sex of
an infant is determined by hormonal activities within the womb.
