The Indian matrimonial landscape is witnessing two terrifying extremes. On one side, the misuse of Section 498A and the Domestic Violence Act leads to institutional harassment and tragic male suicides — as highlighted in the Atul Subhash case. On the other, a chilling trend is emerging: wives and fiancées executing cold-blooded murders of their partners in conspiracy with lovers, involving meticulous planning, evidence concealment, and staged accidents.
These are not mere isolated crimes. They represent a dangerous pattern where the victim’s own trust becomes the deadliest weapon.
Staged Accidents and Blue Drums: The Anatomy of Premeditated Matrimonial Crimes
Recent cases reveal an eerily similar blueprint:
- Ketan Aggarwal Case (Pune, June 2026): Amid preparations for a lavish ₹17 crore palace wedding, fiancée Siya Goyal and her lover Chetan orchestrated multiple failed attempts before pushing Ketan from Lohagad Fort into a 400-foot gorge during a birthday trek. It was staged as an accidental fall. Ketan had ignored prior red flags — physical shoves and even passport theft — blinded by the engagement commitment.
- Sonam Raghuvanshi Case (Meghalaya Honeymoon, 2025): Newlywed Sonam conspired with her lover to have husband Raja murdered by hired killers and his body dumped in a gorge.
- Meerut Blue Drum Murder (2025): Muskan Rastogi and lover Sahil drugged, stabbed, and dismembered her Merchant Navy officer husband Saurabh. They sealed his body in a cement-filled blue drum before casually leaving for a vacation. Similar “drum disposal” cases (like Mumbra-Vasai) suggest an emerging forensic trend.
The Common Blueprint
- Strategic entry into arranged/engaged marriages while maintaining extramarital affairs.- Instagram-perfect “happy couple” facade for alibi.- Motive: “Freedom” to live with the lover, escape unwanted marriage, or financial gain.- Heavy planning, body disposal, and initial staging as accident/missing.
The Legal Vacuum: The Dangerous Pre-Matrimonial Grey Zone
The biggest enabler is the legal “No Man’s Land” between engagement and marriage. Emotional and financial dependence peaks, yet there is zero statutory protection. Threats, blackmail, or harassment are dismissed as “betrothed couple disputes.” Unlike 498A complaints that trigger swift action, these cases see delays until a body surfaces.
The Social Truth
Justice must be non-partisan. Violence and cruelty have no gender. Our system is failing both ways:
-Legal terrorism through false accusations driving men to suicide.- Calculated murders exploiting legal blind spots and societal assumptions. The law cannot remain a post-mortem tool alone.
The Way Forward
- Recognize blackmail, intimidation, and threats during engagement as cognizable offences with preventive policing.- Shift to gender-neutral, evidence-based legal protection.- Strict perjury penalties for false matrimonial cases.- End the toxic “adjust kar lo” culture — families must heed serious red flags.
An engagement or marriage is not a license to take a human life. Until society and the legal system acknowledge the truth from both sides, innocent victims — from both genders — will continue paying with their lives.
