You must have heard the news of an acid attack on his alleged girlfriend by a male lover who has been rejected in one-sided love. But have you ever seen or heard a man facing the same fate?
Sheeba Santhosh, a 35-year-old

carried out a similar incident. Sheeba threw acid on 28-year-old
Arun Kumar, a resident of Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram after
rejecting the proposal of her unrequited love and marriage

Now, Arun is under treatment at the medical college hospital in the state capital and is in danger of losing his eyesight after Sheeba flung acid on him on Nov 16. That day, Arun along with his brother-in-law and friend, went to St Antony's Catholic church in Irumpupalam near Adimali in Idukki district Adimali where he met her at 10am to give the amount she sought.
CCTV footage recovered from the church premises, which emerged later on Nov 20, showed Sheeba, who was standing behind Kumar, come forward and fling acid on his face. In the process though she too suffered some minor burn injuries.

but later he came to know that she was married and is the mother of two
children. He wanted to end the relationship, but she tried to blackmail him and
demanded of Rs 2 lakh to settle down the issue" (PTI )

Acid attack is one of the most violent crimes against women. It has been estimated that around a thousand women suffer acid attacks per year in India. The victims of this heinous crime are not only women but also Indian men. Acid Survivors Foundation India (ASFI) is a NGO based out of Kolkata, West Bengal, which works towards the prevention of acid burn violence as well as provides support services to survivors. ASFI also provides support to many survivors. According to the joint director ASFI, Anita D’Souza, It is not necessary that only women become victims of misdeeds like acid attack, but men too being at the receiving end of acid attacks. “Around 85 per cent of the acid attack survivors we come across are women. The rest 15 per cent are men survivors”. She feels that “in cases of acid attacks on men, the reasons are basically revenge or jealousy, Where an attempt has been made to throw acid not only on his face but also on his private parts.”
